This morning we watched the wind blow fiercely, with a lot of rain.
A little after noon, we pulled anchor and continued on down the ICW to see if the wind was such that we could anchor in one of our favorite anchorages, Walburg Creek. One of the nice things about this stretch of ICW is that high winds don't produce much waves in the "ditch," and the tides and currents were right for a good crossing of St. Catherines Sound.
When we came out of Bear Creek, we ran along the shore of Ossabaw Island until we could run a downwind reach to the northern end of Walburg Creek. Unfortunately, the waves were still coming down the creek, and we knew it would be much worse when the current turned, so we kept going.
There are so many good anchorages through these creeks, but, I wanted to go to one I hadn't been to before, so we continued down to the South Newport River, and to the south enough to clear a shoal to enter Wahoo Creek. The rapid incoming current, and the heavy NE wind had a short, high chop, enough to get the windows covered in salt water. It rained enough during the night to clean it all off though.
We anchored in the lee of Wahoo Island, and what a GREAT anchorage. We could hear the wind roaring in the trees, and barely felt the wind where we were. I think at low tide, there would be a spot to put the dogs ashore between the low spot of the two islands, but, since low tide was middle of the night, and it was raining, and I wasn't gonna launch the dinghy, well, the dogs won't know!
This is an anchorage I'll want to do again!
