Cumberland Island National Seashore

Friday, May 8, 2015

We remain peacefully anchored north of the SeaCamp Dock, at the same position as yesterday.  During the night, evidently the boats to the south of us didn't fair as well as we did.  I saw one boat (trawler) dragging last night, and he relocated near me.  (Why do people who have trouble setting an anchor want to anchor near me?)  We are anchored far enough to the north to be protected from western and northwestern seas by a marsh grass island running north and south nearby.  Now Tropical Storm Ana threw a few bands of dry wind at us last night, which was blowing contrary to the tide, making a miserable night for some folks.  The MERCY rode peacefully.
In the morning, on an incoming tide, (after a potty stop for the kids at SeaCamp dock) we explored the Oldhouse Creek.  It was quite a difference than yesterday evening at low tide.  We enjoyed puttering through all the twists and turns of the creek, finding one huge dock, that from NPS maps may be on NPS property.  I'll have to find out!
We saw two small alligators (3-4') and lots of birds.  We didn't see any dolphins in the creek.  Photos don't do the creek justice!
After a couple hours of exploration, we returned to the boat for a brief hiatus, and power naps for the dogs.  Then we took the RIB into SeaCamp dock, walked across to the Parallel Trail, and northward until we could legally intercept a trail to the beach.  Tomorrow, I'll share more about trails!
The dogs had a great time playing in the water, and running on the beach!
Then we returned to the MERCY just in time to rinse the dogs (salt water to get the sand off, then fresh water to get the salt off) and load the RIB before a passing rain.  It was perfect!  It was timed just right to rinse things off, and give me a chance to take a rain shower.
It has calmed down slick this evening.  There are two trawlers and three sailboats anchored to the south of us, and no one to the north of us.  What a beautiful day!
