Sarah's Creek to Gwynn Island

Saturday, 13 June 2015

We awoke to birds singing in the dawn hours in our Sarah's Creek anchorage.  The morning woke with calm winds, and several boats of fishermen quietly slipping past in this no wake area.
We too, soon joined the boats in the York River.  The current was pushing us as we cruised down towards the Chesapeake, turning northward into Swash Channel. (That name sounds pirate-y to me!) The Swash Channel is an easy to follow, marked channel that provides a short-cut inside of York Spit.
We crossed the Mobjack Bay Inlet and around the New Point Comfort light.  We passed between Wolf Trap light/shoal and the shore.  A call to the Milford Haven USCG Station told me that Hole-in-the-Wall inlet was badly shoaled, so we went around Gwynn Island  and through Hill's Bay into the Milford Haven inlet, passing through the northside opening of the Cricket Hill Road Swing Bridge.
We had decided, since it was super calm, and in the 90's, that we would find a beach to spend a few hours at, where we and the dogs could play in the water.  i think everyone who knows me has heard, "If you were too hot at night, it is because you didn't spend enough time in the water!"
We went by the USCG station on the south, and by Callis Wharf to the north, (which made for some great looking old building pictures!) and down the wide, marked channel.  We pulled towards shore NE of #12, and anchored N37 28.784' W076 16.318' inside a barrier island with a long sandy beach.  What a great side trip!
Our concerns about the "local hang-out" being over crowded with week-enders enjoying this gorgeous weather, school's finally out week-end, were unwarranted.  Though there were a few dozen boats, there is such a large area to stretch out, that it wasn't crowded at all!  We tied the skiff to a submerged log, and waded in the ankle to shin deep water over the sandbar at low tide, towards the Hole-in-the-Wall channel.
The dogs were in their glory, romping, playing, smelling, chasing each other, and enjoying themselves.  Mercy was interested in all the small crabs scurrying about, while Mocha was having more fun just running. We eventually called them to us where we all sat off the inshore side of the sandbar in knee-deep water.  After an hour or so, our body temps had all dropped enough that the air didn't seem nearly as hot anymore, even though the water temp where we sat had to be in the upper 80's!  The water was brackish, a nice change to the high saline content of the tropical waters I'm used to.
We returned to the boat, showered, and decided to stay put for the night, so our side-trip became our destination for the evening.  We explored a neighboring creek or two with the inflatable, and ran the a/c for a few hours before bed-time.
We were all dog-tired.
