Sand City, NY to Coecles Harbor, NY

Monday, 13 July, 2015

This morning we left the anchorage with almost no winds, a condition we enjoyed until late in the day, at which time the wind never got over 10kts.  As we eased out of the warmer water of thee inlet, into the cooler water of Long Island Sound, we moved into light fog, another condition we enjoyed much of the day.
We came around the Eaton's Neck USCG Station before it got too foggy.
We were running far enough out of the VTS (Vessel Traffic Separation scheme-think air traffic control for shipping) that we didn't get any big ships in the fog.
I love Long Island, with its hills and trees, and rocks!
We cut between Plum Island and Orient Point, and went SW to Shelter Island.  Approaching Shelter Island from the eastern side, there is a cut up into a nice cove.  It almost looks like a lake from the inside.

AIS told me this is a 279' pleasure boat.
There is a designated anchorage, where there is a 48 hr. limit.  Who makes up all these rules?  It is a pretty place.

We took the dink to a little island, Cedar Island, in the middle of the "lake" where folks have restored an old Adirondack log cabin.  The cabin is known as the Smith-Taylor Cabin.  I wish we'd been there when we could have gone on the inside, but, we peaked through the windows, and the home was fixed up in early 1900's decor.
We puttered around the cove, looking at the beach by the spit owned by the Nature Conservancy.  Then we returned to the MERCY for a gorgeous sunset.
